How can we prevent furniture and textiles from ending up in a landfill? The answer is by making products that LAST. The saying “buy once, buy well” suggests this notion of purchasing high quality products one time – instead of consistently buying cheap goods that will need to be tossed in a year.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans threw out over 12 million tons of furniture and furnishings in 2018 (up from 2.2 million tons in 1960), and over 80% of it ended up in landfills. What makes Perennials and Sutherland products durable? Materials!
The Perennials Difference
Perennials’ 100% solution-dyed acrylic fibers begin as a liquid acrylic-polymer solution. They are then injected with elemental pigments, extruded, aligned, stretched, crimped, and cut – with the resulting fibers that look and feel like natural cotton.
This production process enables our fabrics to endure the elements better than yarn-dyed or piece-dyed fabrics. Because the yarns are solution dyed, the color permeates to the core, enabling Perennials to confidently offer a three year warranty against fading.
Not only does the solution-dyed acrylic fiber offer a more natural look and feel, the polymer itself adds a higher tenacity, improved abrasion resistance and better color consistency.
Inherently resistant to rot, mold, fungal decay and even small insects, Perennials solution-dyed acrylic fibers are able to maintain their beauty, even in the harshest of environments.
Legacy of Luxury
Sutherland designs are timeless with the material and processes used in the construction ensuring the products last a lifetime. The various raw materials used in Sutherland products are carefully chosen to ensure their properties have a green footprint.
Sutherland works predominantly with 316 grade Stainless Steel, which is widely known as marine grade. Its superior durability and corrosion resistance ensures our products have long-term durability.
Teak remains the chosen timber for our outdoor collections. Teak trees require at least 35 years to develop sufficient density, natural oils & tannin which are the key properties to ensure this beautiful raw material can last a lifetime. Sutherland’s manufacturing partners carefully select teak from plantations in Indonesia and Thailand that harvest responsible volumes.
Sutherland aluminum collections can be ordered with 18 powder coat colors which enhance the appearance and performance of the furniture. All aluminum items have the ability to be recoated if the client wants a change in the appearance.
