Perennials and Sutherland Embrace Life’s Imperfections in Spring 2024 Collection
Wabi Sabi champions serenity with new furniture, fabrics, and rugs
Dallas, Texas – February 5, 2024 — Perennials and Sutherland, LLC, leaders in the international design industry and the preeminent providers of luxury furniture, performance textiles and accessories have announced the debut of Wabi Sabi, a new collection of unique 100% solutiondyed acrylic fabric and rug designs, plus outdoor furniture, for Spring 2024. A nod to the Japanese aesthetic that celebrates beauty found in imperfection, Wabi Sabi features textures, patterns and shapes with worn authenticity. The fabric collection introduces four new qualities – Kikko, Arigato, Paper Crane, and Sake Stripe – and 19 new colorways that draw inspiration from nature like Camel and Mulberry. Wabi Sabi also debuts two new rug designs: Tatami and Taki. The furniture collection, designed by Sutherland Creative Director Eugeni Quitllet, includes four seating options, an ottoman, and a coffee table.
Fabrics
The concept of Wabi Sabi revolves around the idea that objects gain character with life’s wear and tear. Aptly, Perennials collections are built to sustain this wear and tear. Inspired by traditional Japanese shashiko – a form of decorative stitching – Arigato is a new jacquard quality bearing a striking resemblance to hand-stitched embroidery. Arigato is debuting in eight sophisticated colorways like Balsamic and Raspberry. Available in five colorways, Paper Crane is a monochromatic medium-scale reversible jacquard featuring a pattern evoking the shapes of a paper crane. Another new jacquard, Kikko is a multi-color small-scale pattern exhibiting a hexagonal pattern that is a well-known Japanese symbol of good fortune. Kikko is releasing infour colorways like Creamsicle and Melon Fizz.
A rustic take on a stripe, Sake Stripe features a gentle chenille stripe in multiple colors, maintaining a tonal and softly washed appearance. Sake Stripe is available in six colorways such as Rose All Day, Sunstruck, and Jasmine. Perennials is also introducing new colorways of old favorites. Beloved best seller Rough ‘n Tumble is gaining 11 new hues, from Camel and Tobacco to Melon and Raspberry. Perennials’ bestselling velvet, Plushy, is being released in three new colors: Tobacco, Rusty, and Butterscotch. Rough ‘n Rowdy will be available in new versatile colors Camel and Tobacco. Finally, Perennials’ bohemian spin on a classic tweed, Wild Child, will be available in five new colorways including Tree Hugger and Teeny Bopper.
“Spring 2024 embraces tranquility in imperfections and life’s little catastrophes,” says Ann Sutherland, co-founder and Chief Creative Director. “Wabi Sabi fabrics and rugs will add a touch of timeless character and worn elegance to you and your clients’ homes for years to come.”
Rugs
Wabi Sabi marks the launch of two new rug designs that are incredibly versatile and customizable according to project, and explore the harmonious blend of art, comfort, and durability. Evocative of refined beauty and serene imperfection, Taki is an exquisite high-low pile Tibetan knot rug featuring hand-blended color transitioning in a rich ombre. The high-low pile design adds depth and dimension to any space, making every step an indulgent experience. Crafted with Perennials Rope for an organic jute-like appearance, Tatami features a subtle diamond pattern. Wabi Sabi reintroduces a Perennials Rugs favorite – Cascade – a Tibetan knot ombre design. For 2024, the Perennials Rugs team is experimenting with shape, offering Cascade in an oblong shape with vibrant color blending. As with all Perennials rugs, Wabi Sabi rug designs are completely customizable by color and size according to project. With thousands of poms and color combinations to choose from, designers have the freedom to create their own spin on any Perennials rug for any space—indoors or out.
Woven from fine 100% solution-dyed acrylic yarn, Perennials’ fade-, mildew- and UV-resistant fabrics and rugs are able to stand up to life’s everyday adventures without sacrificing great design, making them uniquely suited to fit beautifully with any indoor or outdoor aesthetic. All Perennials fabrics are independently tested and certified in accordance with industry standards, including resistance to soil, water, UV radiation, tearing and abrasion. They are also bleach cleanable and easily maintained. The fabrics in this collection feature Perennials’ performance finish for extra protection against the elements.
Furniture
Eugeni Quitllet designed Wabi Sabi as a vehicle to play with shapes created by light and shadow. An architectural collection, Wabi Sabi features both teak and aluminum pieces that make a statement in a soulful way. Available in teak or powder coated aluminum, the Wabi Sabi Lounge Chair highlights the intersection of chair components in a beautiful balanced structure. Similarly, the accompanying ottoman may act as an extension of the chair. The Wabi Sabi Four Seat Sofa and Three Seat Sofa are bold pieces crafted with humble design in mind. he sofas, along with the complementary Wabi Sabi Coffee Table, are available in teak and powder coated aluminum. The pièce de résistance – the Wabi Sabi Great Lounge Chair – is a showstopper featuring an armed slender frame (available in teak or aluminum) intersected by a capacious teak seat.
“For me, this collection is the vision of the void in between the matter,” explains Eugeni Quitllet, Sutherland Creative Director. “Wabi Sabi challenges matter in a perfect balance.”
